18A "Upper Body Prep" in 21:30, JBF "Drumroll" 30 min AMRAP with 2 rounds and 71 reps with a 30#R and 40#SB (with ruck step-ups as the cardio, curls and sit-up presses being the hardest).
Afterwards, I did an easy 5 mile ruck in 1:38:30 in Altra Torin Plush's, going past midnight, since I wasn't sleepy and wanted to re-condition my shoulders and legs for rucking.
Thursday, Aug 7:
Glute and pec PT v1 in 26:39, PF "Training Day" 30 min AMRAP with 45#SB with 7 rounds and 8 reps.
Friday, Aug 8:
Day 9 - Balance | BREATH & Prana Day 5 Yoga with Adriene.
Did a fast (14:07/mi) 7-mi ruck afterwards in MACV1s in 1:38:46... pretty sweaty, and I drank a Hero at mile 4.
OSPREY 2-GUN
I saw a friend post about this match on FB, and the facility and stages looked really cool. I just had to sign up! Especially since I've been doing some more pure shooting matches to get better at the shooting portion, this seemed like a good thing to try out.
I had never heard of this match beforehand. It's a 3 hour drive away, which is probably part of the reason, but that's within a reasonable driving limit for an event. I started following their IG, and they did post a couple of previews of the stages, and we got an email the evening before with more details on what to expect, which helped for a first timer who would've been otherwise going in blind.
With an 8:30am check-in and 9:30am brief, I had an early start, but the 4-stage match was done by 1:30pm. We needed minimum 52R, 82P, and the longest shot would be 130yd.
Stage 1: Assault
- Rifle starts staged on a fence, bolt forward, no mag in
- Start on the back low wall with rifle mags staged, with loaded and holstered pistol
- On the beep, hit a 75m big steel torso with pistol 1x
- Grab rifle mags as desired, and you can keep your pistol hot and out as you go to the Supernova (three-arm Texas star, where each arm has a mini-three-arm Texas star)
- Shoot the Supernova from behind the roof, clear, and holster
- Run to the fence, load rifle, and shoot standing unsupported at 4 steel with 1 hit each
- Repeat from supported on the fence
- Run forward to the low wall and shoot the same steel standing unsupported
- Optionally shoot 2 small bonus steel, worth 5s each (support allowed)
Learnings/Outcomes: 19/36 O, 125s
- Used 21P, 20R with IMI
- Messy for everything
- Took 3 shots on the 75yd torso
- Maybe hit every other Supernova attempt (especially missed on the first triangle... not a good start)
- Messy standing rifle, and even messy on the barricade
- Brought 1 mag for the fence and left the spare on the front wall
- Skipped the bonus since it would've been close to a wash anyways, at best
- 4.5x magnification was good
- Supernova strategy: once you engage one triangle, switch to another, since the lower ones would still be stable, and let the small previously engaged triangle settle in the meantime
- At least the spinning radius on the small triangles isn't that big
Stage 4: 50m
- Stage pistol hot on the picnic table in front of the Star and plate rack
- Start at the USPSA lane with hot rifle with butt stock touching your belt
- Shoot 2 per cardboard (or one on the T-head) , on 9 cardboard. Clear rifle and ground it on the mat.
- Move to the picnic table and shoot the Star and plate rack with your butt sitting on the bench. Holster within the picnic table, hot
- Go back to the USPSA lane, unholster once you're in the lane, and shoot 2 per cardboard again
Learnings/Outcomes: 24/36 O, 103s
- I was the first to go for my squad
- I shot one extra P and one extra R during the USPSA lane
- Used 19R, 39P total, with Federal 5.56
- Not too bad
- Sight over bore wasn't a huge issue on cardboard since the targets were big, and any 2 hits counted
- I preferred hands extended on the Star, vs bracing on the table, which I initially tried and abandoned immediately
- Allowed to stay on fire for rifle, but I went on safe during movements as a best practice
- Knelt for the last position on rifle, since there was a no-shoot right in front of me
- I used 1x magnification and turned on my dot for speed on the rifle
- On the plate rack, 1/3 of the time, I hit low, based on how water splashed evenly below the lower bar
- I used the chest rig to carry extra mags, but I only needed 3 pistol mags anyways
- I had one malfunction on pistol near the end of the mag, and racking solved it
- I went un-slung, since I'd have to ground the rifle at the end anyways
Stage 3: 35m
- Start hot and holstered, seated on a chair
- Make 1 hit per steel through a window
- Move to the right barricade and shoot 1 hit per steel from the L and from the right
- Repeat at the next barricade to the left
- From the frame, shoot 1-handed at 3 knock-downs, then shoot 2 per cardboard on 4 cardboard
Learnings/Outcomes: 16/36 O, 59s
- Used 30P (vs 26 min)
- Nearly clean on steel... maybe only 1 miss
- Shot extra on the cardboard based on where I saw the reticle when the shot broke
- Felt good, even 1-handed
- First stage I recorded for the day, since I was still feeling like a stranger in the early stages
- Last to go for my squad
Stage 2: Combat Alley
- Start inside the VTAC with both weapons hot, butt stock of the rifle touching your belt
- Shoot 2 per cardboard with rifle
- Use the post to brace the rifle and shoot 3 steel
- Shoot unsupported at the same 3 steel
- Shoot from anywhere on the VTAC at the same 3 steel
- Run up to the fault line and shoot 2 cardboard, 2 hits each. Then shoot the same 3 steel.
- Run up to the barrel and shoot 2 per cardboard at 2 cardboard behind the truck, sling rifle front.
- Transition to pistol and shoot 3 poppers and the same 3 steel.
- Run forward to the building, shoot 1 cardboard guy out front with 2 hits
- Go inside and shoot the hostage taker in the left room with 2 hits
- Go to the open door in the back and shoot 3 cardboard, 2 hits each
Learnings/Outcomes: 28/36 O, 92s
- Used 25P, 25R, with Federal 5.56
- Shot extras on paper because I wasn't happy with the shots
- Fought the first pistol popper... nearly should've skipped it, but I got it
- Funnest stage of the day with going into the building and the dynamic nature of it
Overall: 23/36
- 2nd out of 4 for the girls, beat by a girl who had been at TTG, who shot well
- 3:10 and 3:20 drive for <10 min of shooting is a lot, but it's OK on an otherwise free weekend
- Cool facility, wished I lived closer
- Multiple people had catastrophic malfunctions, but they got to re-shoot, which is nice
- Take my time more on cardboard
Workout Afterwards on Saturday, Aug 9:
JBF "Invader" in 1:25:56 with a 30#R and 40#SB in MACV1s... my shoulders were not a fan of this one (strain-inducing). Did 1 mile afterwards for "extra credit" with a 30#R in 25:50.
Sunday, Aug 10:
Post-travel Stretch & Yoga for Winter Blues with Adriene
AUGUST BLACKSTONE SECOND TUESDAY MATCH
Stage 1: <COMSTOCK>
- Start loaded and holstered, hands by your side, facing squarely uprange
- Shoot 3 from L, 2 from center, 3 from R (if you're smart and efficient), with 2 rounds each
Learnings/Outcomes: 11/13 Div, 33/38 O
- Through many dry runs, I figured out that I could get to all the targets from three positions (L, C, R)
- 12A, 4C (with 1 extra that I think I needed) in 28.15 = 2.56 HF
- Went slow, I but I feel like my shots weren't as solid as they could've been for that slowness
- My movements were slow, too, like a walk, though not inefficient, looking back at the video
- Got nervous right before my turn
Stage 2: <COMSTOCK>
- Start unloaded and holstered with feet on XXs
- Shoot 2 targets with 1 hand only, 2 shots each from back left
- Shoot 2 from window up front (6 if you can wrap around the window)
- Shoot the window curve's 2 from the left side of the right area if you didn't try the curve earlier, or wait until you get to teh right side of the right area and shoot 5 instead of 3
Learnings/Outcomes: 9/13 Div, 26/38 O
- From the prior person, I saw that you could safetly shoot 4 from the far right side of the far right area
- I did a preemptive mag change after the window
- Barely remembered to charge gun after the reload
- Faster movement this time
- Did a couple of wilder shots from the far right on the close targets
- Double-tapped a little faster on purpose this time, but I don't know if it's worth the tradeoff on points if I'm not as accurate
- May need to grip and crank harder when I do double-taps
- 17A, 1C in 28.85 = 3.0 HF
Stage 4: <VIRGINIA>
- Start with feet on XXs, hands by sides
- Shoot 2 from back left (2 hands this time)
- Shoot 4 from window (1 upside-down and 1 normal target on top of no-shoot added), 6 if feisty
- Shoot 2 from left side of the right area if you didn't do it from the window
- Shoot 4 from the far right of the right side (added 1 normal on top of the no-shoot)
Learnings/Outcomes: 11/13 Div, 35/38 O
- First to go
- 18A, 5C, 1M in 32.90 = 2.89 HF
- The miss *could've* been a perfect keyhole... it was a close target, so I have doubts about me being that bad
- I had a malfunction in the window, and it took a couple of racks to clear
- Forgot the preemptive mag change, but I happened to run empty on the move to the far right
- I may have to slow down on my double-taps
- Realized afterwards that there was an upside-down target where I should've aimed low at
Stage 3: <VIRGINIA>
- Start unloaded and holstered, feet on XXs, hands above shoulders
- Shoot 4 from the right with an extra target on a no-shoot and an extra no-shoot
- Shoot 3 from the center, with an extra with a sideways no-shoot on him
- Shoot 3 from the left with an extra no-shoot
Learnings/Outcomes: 13/13 Div, 38/38 O
- 17A, 1C, 1D, 1M, 1 NS, 8 Procedurals in 27.59 = 0 HF... procedurals were devastating
- The XXs were in the front right for this stage, and I didn't step back into the lane... I was partially distracted by turning on Ray Ban Metas that someone let me borrow to record the stage... there were sho many targets (4x 8 shots) shot from that first position, so that hurt
- I felt like I otherwise shot ok, but I guess I didn't actually, based on the scores... looking back, the targets were harder because of the no-shoots this time
- Forgot the upside-down target adjustment on the first shot, but I corrected on the second shot on that target
- I went last, which was another factor for mental fatigue and mistakes
Overall: 13/13 Div, 38/38 O
- Have gun pulled out and ready to shoot early during movements, whenever possible
- Need to figure out a stage prep process for USPSA, like 1) see targets, 2) plan stopping spots and targets to engage per spot and the sequence, 3) count where I need to do mag changes, 4) note any upside-down targets, 5) remember the start position and any gun manipulations that you need to start with
- I had a rough week at work with concerns about potential job losses, so I was mainly here for a mental break and wasn't as concerned about the outcome of the match... job loss risks put things into perspective, so the procedurals weren't a big deal to me
- Ray Bans were cool, but I'd probably get too distracted setting them up
- Extremely humid inside today... condensation on windows and floors
Workout Afterwards on Saturday, Aug 12:
PATHFINDER Ruck Training baseline test... 50/40 pushups in 2 min, 84/76 sit-ups in 2 min, 2 mi run in 15:24/15:54 in 79* temps with 90% humidity at night in Saucony VizPro = 300 APFT score.
2 mile ruck afterwards in 30:13 with 30#R in Salomon X-Missions.
