TACTICAL SNIPER SERIES @ SAWMILL

This would be my first long range comp since Mammoth.  It was made to be doable by gas gunners with tactical division weapons, so the targets weren't super far away and weren't super small.  It would be a good way to get back into it.

What's cool about doing this event was that it was SB and my first ever long comp one year ago, which is crazy to think about.  We took videos of our stages, and looking back at them, it's soooo funny to see the kinds of newbie mistakes we used to make.  I had very little clue.  It's crazy how far we've come in a year.

There would be 6 stages with 105s par time.  Similar to last time, there would be pistol with ranges from 7-75yd, and rifle 800yd and in.  Pistol targets not hit would cost 10s and rifle targets not hit would cost 30s in the time plus match.

My goals going into the match was to hold when I could, to practice speed.

Stage 3: Blue is Not Your Color

- Shoot 5 pistol poppers with 1 hit ea, and do this 2x.  Clear and dump.

- Go prone on the sandbags without using bipods, and shoot 10 targets N->F, with 3 @ 200yd, 3 @ 400yd, 3 @ 600yd, and 1 @ 630yd.

Results:

- I was off by one set of targets on my dialing, but the targets were big enough that I still hit the firs tcouple set of targets.  Eventually, I realized what had happened.

- The stage still went pretty well, despite the mental error.

Stage 4: Tower Power

From the third floor of the connex structure...

- Shoot 4 white big but angled pistol targets with 1 hit ea, 2x.  Clear and dump.

- Shoot from the window with your rifle at 8 targets, going L->R, 1 hit ea, on targets at 195yd, 90yd, 175yd, 200yd, 145yd, 120yd, 150yd, 92yd.

Results:

I had to shoot a few times at the smaller circle pistol target because I rushed it too much.

I hadn't figured out the landmark for the first rifle target ahead of time, so I had to find them all and figure out which one was leftmost on the clock, which wasted time.

Low magnification made switching from target to target easy.

I dialed 0.1 and held center, which worked fine on rifle - no misses.

Stage 5: Positional Punisher

- Shoot 2 square targets with rifle at 350yd with 1 hit ea, from 1) tire stack, 2) tank trap, 3) saw horse, 4) back to tank trap, 5) back to tire stack.  Unload and show clear.

- Use pistol to shoot at 2 targets with 1 hit ea from the same 5 positions.

Results:

- The stages aren't blind at this match, and you can watch others shoot it.  The guy before me was able to make the center of the tank trap work even with the wooden beams' angles, so I used the same position.  I missed on the tank trap and saw horse.

- My pistol trigger wasn't squeezing for some reason.  Maybe my finger wasn't in enough?  Strange, because it has never happend before.  I had cleaned it 200 rounds ago, which should've been fine.  That, plus not moving fast enough on rifle, even though I thought I had been moving pretty well, made me miss 8 pistol targets.

Stage 6: Pile Up

- From the driver's seat, exit the car and shoot at 5 pistol targets N->F 1 hit ea, 2x.

- Use rifle to shoot at 5 targets, N->F, 2x, on targets at 129yd, 218yd, 220yd, 250yd.

Results:

- My Hornady bullets started disintegrating downrange before hitting the targets, from the 5th target onwards.  I didn't hear a ping but was confident it was a perfect shot.  When I wasn't getting impacts even on the close target, I figured out what was going on.

Stage 1: Get Your Rocks Off

With my barrel issues, I switched to using SB's RPR for the rest of the match.

- Shoot from teh tall right rock at 5 targets L->R, 1 hit ea at 100yd, then place rifle on the left rock.

- Use pistol to shoot at 3 targets L->R, 1 hit ea, 3x.

- Go to the left rock to shoot rifle at 5 right rifle targets 1 hit ea, L->R.

Results:

- I remembered to check zero and parallax beforehand, but didn't check magnification.  The scope was still zoomed in from the stage before, plus the optical focus on SB's gun is different from what I needed, so it was a bit blurry.  That made target acquisition hard.  I got wrong sequence at one point.  It was very messy.  I didn't fix the magnification until I moved to the second rifle position.  Maybe I should've adjusted from the start, as soon as I realized it was going to be an issue.

- I pushed the pace on pistol and wasn't terrible from that perspective but missed a few times.  I talked to SW afterwards and learned that I should only go as fast as I can without missing, though, so I pushed the pace too hard.

- Modified prone on the rock was messy with only one bipod leg touching the rock because the rock was slanted.

- I timed out with one shot left.  I would've made it had I not shot the wrong sequence.  I was very frustrated by the magnification mistake.  I should be grateful that I had a working gun to shoot, though.

Stage 2: Pink Zombie

- Shoot rifle from the barricade at 5 targets from L->R at 200yd.

- Switch barricade positions and shoot 1 target at 340yd.

- Switch positions and shoot 4 targets from L->R at 400yd.  Unload show clear.

- Use pistol to shoot L&R targets back and forth, six times.

Results:

- I did well, with no misses and good magnification this time.

- I didn't have room on the picatinny for my dope card, but I put the card on the barricade itself to refer to.

- My kneeling position was not ideal... no skeletal stability.

- I did really well on pistol, even with the skinny zombie target.

- This was good redemption after the previous stage.

Overall

51/61 Overall

2/4 Bolt

Learnings:

- 7-10x magnification was perfect for this

- I'm happy with how I run my bolt.

- My gun goes dirty after 35rds, causing bullets to blow up.  I had cleaned it beforehand.

- It was good to try holding.

- Next time, I want to try the pint sized GC instead of the Schmedium, to see if it helps me square up better.

- I need to not kneel so weird... may need to try double kneeling.

- Pushed pistol speed a little too much

- Better than a year ago, but still haven't mastered pre-stage checklists, taking the time to fix things from the start, good positions.
