Santa Ruck Anti-Virtual Basic 2021

TRAINING LEAD-UP

Monday, Nov 22:

Day 27 - Heal | BREATH Yoga with Adriene for 19 minutes.  Short, but felt great.  Did more stretching afterwards.  Blisters have receded.

Tuesday, Nov 23:

"Heavy Week" PATHFINDER Compete PT challenge workout #1 in 28 minutes.  Wanted an arm-centric workout after RWC anyways.  Got my COVID booster today, so I may be out of commission tomorrow.

Wednesday, Nov 24:

"Alvin" SRT WOD in 18 min with 45#SB, followed by "Hornet 18" SRT 18 min AMRAP with 30#SB, followed by 4x(10 arm raises and 15 4-ct Russian twists with a 10# plate) for 9 min.  Kind of tired and brain foggy during the day, so I napped.  Arm was sore, body a little sore from the booster.

Thursday, Nov 25:

Did some of the permanent orienteering course at Latta Nature Preserve with my dad, attempting CPs 14-17.  Glad to bring him into this new hobby of mine.  He's gone geocaching with me before, but it's the first time we've orienteered together.  Wore the Altra Lone Peak Mids for extra ankle stability.

We worked backwards, starting from 17 and going counter clockwise.  We tried very hard, but were unable to find CP14.  Who knows if it's really still out there.  You can see how much we wandered around.  3 miles in 2:02:52 with a 30# ruck.

Thanksgiving dinner made by my dad...

Behind the scenes of that nice-looking picture, though, you'd be able to see what a mess my dining room, which has become an armory, is...

We got to virtually enjoy the meal with my sister...

Friday, Nov 26:

Took my dad to Blackstone...

Picked up a TV for Black Friday...

Walked around the neighborhood with my dad, to check out new construction, wearing a 30# ruck and the Altra Torin Plush.

In the evening, we went to see the Van Gogh Immersive Experience.  We don't do stuff like this often, so it was special.  There's a pre-exhibit area with a gift shop and some fun things to look at and interact with.

The Charlotte version was hosted in the historic Ford Factory, which was used to build missiles at one time.

For the experience itself, there are 360 degree video projectors projecting art that comes to life with the music.  There are socially distanced benches for people to sit in.  You can really face whichever way you want, and different screens will show different portions of the art growing or getting emphasized over the course of each song.

We stayed for several replays, to fully soak in the experience.  I'm lucky to have gotten to visit the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam a couple of times before (OCRWC 2018 and on a work trip in 2013), so it was fun to see this imaginative take on his works stateside.

At night, we tested out the new TV.  We watched some van life Netflix shows, and also found a video where I could imaging myself paddling along a river.

Saturday, Nov 27:

Met up with SB at Blackstone.  We got to try out Daniel Defence Machine Guns.  It was my first time using an automatic.  It pushes you back quite a bit!

In the afternoon, I went to the USNWC with my dad, to check out this year's ice rink and walk around a bit.  No ruck.

Sunday, Nov 28:

Did my second iteration of the PATHFINDER Compete PT Test with 47 pushups, 81 situps, 12 squat cleans @ 60#, 4 SB GUs with 60#, 14 SB push presses with a 60#SB and 30#R, and a 1:25 dead hang with 30#R.  Afterwards, I rucked in the neighborhood with my dad with a 30#R in 22:40 to pick up some freebies being given away by a neighbor.  We got some plates.  Then, we pruned the fig tree, which gets wild and massive, quickly.

Monday, Nov 29:

HDT IR 18-19.1.2 (legs and core) in 37 min, followed by HDT March Madness "Sweet 16" 20 min AMRAP with a 30#R with 6 rounds and 16 reps.

Tuesday, Nov 30:

Yoga for a Flexible Mind and Body with Adriene for 22 min, after clearing out the garage a little.  Sore from yesterday.

Wednesday, Dec 1:

PATHFINDER Compete "Heavy Week" PT Challenge #2 in 32 min, followed by 4 miles in a 40#WV in MACV1s to look for Xmas lights in the neighborhood.  Not much out yet.

Thursday, Dec 2:

PATHFINDER Compete Propel Challenge - Sandbag evolution, with about 0.65 miles in about 90 min (2 full rounds plus half of the SB CST), wearing MACV1s, a 30#R, and using a 30#SB.

Friday, Dec 3:

2 miles for another free item pickup in the neighborhood, with the Altra Torin Plush, a 30#R, and the free goods.

Saturday, Dec 4:

2 hours and 13 miles of MTB (Parkway>Panda>Needle>Carolina Thread>Gravel/Pavement) at the USNWC.  Wore the OutThereUSA AS3 while riding, for the first time, to get used to riding with a sizeable adventure racing pack.  Tipped over once, doing an accidental wheelie while going uphill against rooty steps.  My bag had 3L of water and gear.  I did a long break between the two loops to attempt a nap.  The Shimano chamois wasn't as comfortable as I remember the Bontrager being at Santos.

Went to the range with Brandon in the evening.

Sunday, Dec 5:

Firearms and Adventure Race training day at Pete's.

We started off with getting bikes set up well.

A lizard decided to become friends with AT.

Those hills were tough!

We covered 4.5 miles in 1 hour on the grassy trails.  I didn't wear a chamois this time, just my GORUCK sweatpants, and it was fine.  I wore the AS3 again.

We practiced plotting and route planning for the remaining points from the 8-hour Long Creek Adventure Race.  We had only done the 4-hour, but I got a copy of the other CP coordinates from a friend's FB page.

After that, we practiced some shooting.  This was my third consecutive day of shooting, and I'd end up doing a forth the next day!

Two of my favorite things to do on the same day, with my favorite teammates - pretty awesome.

Tuesday, Dec 7:

PATHFINDER Int/Adv No Cap (but one).  Did 5 rounds plus 24 reps out of the 8, before the 45 min cap.  30#R and 40#SB.  Listened to the Finger Bago F3 podcast.

In the evening, I did a 2.5 mile coupon ruck with a 30#R and 25-50# of coupons... mostly 25#.

Wednesday, Dec 8:

Morning Yoga Flow with Adriene for 21 min.  Sore from yesterday in the shoulders, legs, and even core!

Saturday, Dec 11:

My sister helped me put up the Xmas tree.

She even agreed to come along on the Santa Ruck later that day!!!  It would be her first time doing anything official-ish.

SANTA RUCK ANTI-VIRTUAL BASIC

There was no official GORUCK Santa Ruck this year,  so local club leaders worked together to plan and lead different portions.  Buddy the Elf, who did an amazing job leading last year, was the Cadre.  When I arrived at the parking lot, I discovered that there was suddenly a building at our old meeting spot, so we spread the word about moving the meeting point across the street.  Once we got everyone together, we set off.

"Candy Cane Formation"

We did a round plus of the Chicken Little Hero WOD at the pond.  We had tragically lost him about a month ago.

We went to UNCC's pavilion, to play dodgeball at the field, which the kids and grownups enjoyed.  Some grownups don't go easy on the tiny kids, either, haha.  I took pictures.

On our way to Kirk Farm Park, there was a tiny interlude on the playground, which the kids were naturally drawn to.

At Kirk Farm Park, I led Reindeer Games relays, where each team was given a stack of cards for relay tasks.  They were different types of deer, like baby deer, where one GRT had to carry another around the cone (it helps to have small ones on your team), dizzy deer, where you spin around 10x before going out and back, strong deer that carries multiple rucks out and back, etc.  The teams got to plan out their strategy, to leverage strengths and such.

There was another round of dodgeball, and then we began the trek back to the start.

At the finish, stickers and candy canes were distributed.  We had covered 5 miles in 3:07:32.  Aftewards, we had pizza at Blaze.
