Winston-Salem with Storm, Rugged Maniac NC I, Custom HTL Role Playing

Monday, Jun 14

Open Level Flow Yoga at the USNWC, followed by a 3 mile trail ruck on South Main, carrying 30# plus a yoga mat.  It's a beautiful place.

Tuesday, Jun 15:

Range Day

Wednesday, Jun 16:

HDT 13.3.3 (Core) in 57 minutes with a 30#R and 40#SB coupon ruck at the end.  Felt good to grind again.  Listened to Glorious Professionals Podcast covering Ashley's War.  Frickin' motivational.

Jun 19-20

Dog-sitting with my sister.  Lots of walks.

Saturday, Jun 19:

7.5 mile trail run at Salem Lake at an 8:31 pace.  Didn't push super hard, since Rugged Maniac was the following weekend.  It was cloudy, so it wasn't super hot.

Monday, Jun 21:

USNWC Open Level Flow.  I tried a different spot this time, on the opposite side from my usual spot.  I prefer my original spot.  Another 3 mile ruck afterwards.  I saw fireflies and a deer.  It was darker today due to clouds, despite it being the summer solstace.

Tuesday, Jun 22:

Range Day with a hard seltzer tasting and some free swag.  I'm more of a beer person.

Saturday, Jun 26:

RUGGED MANIAC NC I

Rugged Maniac at the Rockingham Dragway.  It was my first time taking 1st.  During the awards ceremony, they normally ask the 1st place person to give a piece of advice.  I mentally prepared what I was going to say.  It was going to be something about being grateful for this opportunity to be out here racing, which is something we appreciate more now after all of the COVID craziness.  Fortunately, they deviated from their norm and didn't ask me to say anything.  As excited as I was about taking first, I was probably about as excited to see Pikachu racing in a later heat.

I couldn't stay for too long, because I was volunteering as a role player at an F3 custom HTL in Greenville, SC, afterwards.  On the first evening, I was a bad guy guarding a complex that the class had to plan an ambush around.  I got shot, and then they had to decide whether to render aid or let me die slowly.  They chose the latter.  They used people clearing techniques to make sure I didn't have a grenade under me.  There were lots of mosquitos in the meantime.

Pete kindly let me stay at his place overnight, when my original plan was to sleep in my car.

Early the next morning, the volunteers got dropped off at different points around downtown Greenville.  The HTL class was split into three groups, and each group set off to visit our locations and perform for us ("I Love You Maybe"), in exchange for a cooler that they then got to carry.

Albert and I got to hang out at Falls Park.  This used to be my old marathon training grounds.  It's a beautiful place, and it brought back memories being back.  It was probably 6 hours from beginning to end, between the early morning meetup and the last visit.  Role Players do a lot of hurry up and wait, but from my own experiences being on the receiving end, it definitely makes the event participants' experience a lot more memorable.  It provided good perspective, and I was glad to be on the other side and have the opportunity to give back.

We met back up at Mayberry Park afterwards to watch them finish and get patched.  They took of their shirts to be manly, which was kind of funny.  There was an afterparty at the nearby brewery, which I stayed a little while for.  They got to experience a cool event, with role playing, some unique pool training, and awesome cadres.  Wish I could've done it, but role playing for a little bit of it is the next best thing.
