Sunday, April 3:

10-hour Spartan Build volunteer shift


Monday, Apr 4:

I hosted an "Intro to Rucking" clinic at the park where the Pearl Harbor Tough had been held, since it was a nice location.

I talked about ruck and sandbag options, and then we did quarter mile loops.  There was a pile of sandbags weighing 20, 30, 40, 60, and 80# for people to try out.  

Afterwards, we did a 10 min, mostly ruck-based workout.  You could scale it to be slick, or add more weight with sandbags and ruck wearing.  We did lunges, SB DLs, ruck swings, flutter kicks, and push presses, for one minute each, for two rounds.  I thought it was a decent mixture of muscle groups worked, with good scaling options.






Lastly, since GORUCK is known for its team-based events, I split them into two groups for relays, but they got to strategize a bit on which sized sandbag to use for the two movements - tosses vs sandbag bear crawls, and they worked with a buddy to go out and back.


We finished with another tradition of GORUCK events - beer at the end.  Blue Blaze Brewing was probably less than a quarter mile a way, fortunately for us!

It's awesome that such a big group came out.  I wonder if it sounded very approachable, or if the title made it sound official.  All of the Charlotte Ruck Club events are scalable to any level, but this one seemed to really appeal to people.


Wednesday, Apr 6:

JBF 30 min "Ladders" SB workout with a 40#SB and 30#R, wearing Ballistics and a v3 shorty ruck. 

Finished with 19 min of 2x(100 situps, 25 pushups) and 2x(50 4-ct flutter kicks, 50 ruck swings).

Tacked on 4.5 miles with Pokemon and the Straight Dope podcast as a recovery ruck in 1:33:32.


Thursday, Apr 7:

Joined Cabarrus Ruck Club for a history ruck.  We covered 2.5 miles in 1:06:07, including a stop in a cemetery where we saw a monument that honored Lt. Col. Samuel Iredell Parker, who at least a county is named after.  He was awarded the MoH for his acts in WWI.  When machine gun fire from a hill exploited a gap in the allies' formations, he led a group up there to storm and overtake the position.







GORUCK BATAAN BASIC CLT

This would be a very unique Basic, because it would be held at night.  It's cool that they're willing to change things up to see what sticks with people.  That gave me the opportunity to do the Basic, and still get to the elite wave of Rugged Maniac 2 hours away.  The Tough would be held during the daytime, so I'd miss that.

I was so glad to be able to do this, since Cadre DS was leading it, and he always puts on unique and quality events.  It was also the 80th anniversary.

The start point was Romare Bearden Park, and I don't like paying for parking, so I rucked 1.5 miles in to get there from free parking.

At the park, we went barefoot, like we were just chilling, and then had to respond to air raid sirens to get to the other side of the park.  We did this a couple times, as a part of admin.  One guy had left his ID in a car, which was unfortunately within retrieving distance, so he had to bear crawl to get it, or something.

Our first stop was at a Japanese restaurant.  We had to drink up, since we wouldn't be allowed to take more sips of water or eat until we were given permission to, again, the way the prisoners had to keep going despite hunger and thirst, even when they walked by potential sources of comfort.  We had to keep our water containers out, as a reminder.  We got hints that the soldiers would've tried to resist by getting what they could past the watching eyes of their captors.

We went to Pearle St. Neighborhood Park near Trader Joe's.  I never knew that a park existed there.  We did a round of the Bataan Memorial WOD.  

We learned Alpine butterfly knots and connected our rucks to it for a movement to Freedom Park.  At the park, the rucks stayed connected as we did exercises in a circle.  We took turns introducing ourselves and an exercise, and as each person took their turn, they had to recite the names of everyone who had come before.  Fortunately, I knew many of the people in the class already, and it wasn't a huge class.

After that, we learned some BJJ moves, where you grab someone's arm and twist it behind their back.  

We went up to Latta Park for more PT, and then made our way back into uptown.  We did another round of the WOD, still with rucks tied together, in front of BoA stadium.


We covered 7.2 miles in 4:31:06.

Still got it!  I got first place again.  Fortunately, I didn't get asked to give advice on stage, like they sometimes ask the winner to do.  I'd end up saying something dumb.


The balance beam was new for this year.




It was good to be able to go home and rest afterwards, as opposed to doing a volunteer shift.


SPARTAN SPRINT CLT

The next morning, though, it was time to race again, this time with Spartan.

This was a very interesting vehicle to park behind.  It didn't seem super new or clean, though.  I wonder what the story is behind it.  Bold choice, especially at these races... at many races where it rains, these fields become mud pits where cars get stuck.  I once had a $1000+ repair bill from it.


Since GORUCK Games includes an OCR component, these back-to-back rucking and OCR events were a good confidence builder.  My goal wasn't speed, by this point in the weekend.  It was just completion.







This was an honor series race, so the medal was really, really cool.  Maybe the coolest one so far!


Afterwards, I volunteered at the kids' race, followed by tear-down.  


Post-race "Excitement"

As I exited the farm, though, I somehow managed to drive over a piece of rebar that was on the dirt road.  I heard it happen.  While driving, I'd hear a clanking noise.  Further into town, though, my tire pressure warning came on.  I pulled over in a random parking lot and saw something sticking out of the tire.  Air was coming out of the tire quickly.  I looked up auto repair shops on my phone.  This late in the day on Sunday, not many were open.  An AutoZone was just down the road, though, so I went there.  I bought a patch kit and borrowed a pair of pliers, but I couldn't pull the thing out.  Little did I know that the thing was like a foot long in there.

A guy coming off his shift from the Autozone helped me swap out the tire with my spare, though, out of the goodness of his heart.  That allowed me to drive home.  Fortunately, this was a CLT race, and not a "middle of nowhere" race that was hours away, so I made it home, and was able to take the car to a shop the next day to get the rebar pulled out and the hole patched.  The guys at Comptons saved the day again!


The car issues stemming from the parking situations at these races have ended up being pretty costly elements of the racing budget!  Almost makes you think twice about racing, even.  You can't predict the weather beforehand, for the mud pit scenario, unfortunately.

Wednesday, Mar 30:

3 mile coupon ruck with a 30# ruck plus a 20# SB suitcase carried, switching hands every quarter mile, followed by a 20 min AMRAP (JBF EMOM done as an AMRAP), then JBF "Quality" with a half mile run in 4:11, 30 min SB PT, and a half mile ruck in 7:28.  Catching up on missed workouts!

SOUTH FORK SAMPLER


Pre-Race

Adventure races are fun, especially with good friends.  This was going to be SB and I's third AR together, after the USNWC's Long Creek 4-hour Adventure Race and the Sea to Sea 72-hour Adventure Race.  There was a 4-hour option and an 8-hour option.  Typically, the longer the better, as long as we're not trying to taper for something else, so we opted for the 8-hour.  They also offered a corporate edition on Friday.  Their goal is to get people outside, especially in the great and relatively unknown parks and outdoor spaces in our community.  They certainly achieved this, as I discovered two new parks and a trail really close to home, that I had no clue about before.  

This is a beginner-friendly race, which hosted a clinic about 10 days before the race, to help newbies to the sport learn what gear to pack and what to expect with the format.  While road races and the like are plentiful, AR is a less well-known sport.  EcoChallenge airing on Amazon Prime brought it back / much more into prominence more easily, though, and gave those tired of the same-old-same-old something new to try.

We got there early, because that's what I like to do, especially with an event that requires more logistical prep than usual.  We signed waivers, picked up the 2-person kayak and PFDs that we had signed up to rent, and staged our bins, camping chairs, and bikes in the parking lot.  We'd be able to set up a little transition area in the parking lot, which was nice.  There would be race officials around all day, to make sure our stuff was safe.  The race's area of operation extended north and south from the parking lot, and the kayak launch was right there, too, so this was perfect.


Originally, the plan was for the race to be traditional in that there would be no phones or GPS's allowed.  They later changed it so that it could be more beginner-friendly.  Even though it may put us at a disadvantage from a competitive perspective, SB and I decided to try to use our map and compass only, as much as possible, to sharpen those skills.


Prelude and Planning

The race started with a prelude, like many races do, to spread out the field a bit.  We had to run to the end of a road, pick up an empty bottle, and bring it back to the start to stick it in the recycling truck.  This event supports sustainability, so this was a nice, themed way to begin the event.  Only one person from the team had to do this run, and I was happy to be the person for my team, especially because I enjoy running and SB does not.  Once the bottle was in the truck, we could collect our maps for the race.  SB and I got to planning.  We didn't care if it took us a while, or if everyone left before we did.  We know that a few minutes of good planning and strategy can save miles and hours.





There were three main sections of map - central, south, and north.  There were also some more detailed trail maps for parks.  Our plan was to go south first, grab a bunch of points.  Next, we would come back to the TA to paddle, since we have a little less knowledge about how long that leg would take, so we didn't want to risk being stuck out on the water and run out of time.  We'd take the northern section last.  


Southern Portion

I had some familiarity with McAdenville from past rucks during Christmastime.  It was fun getting to show the area to SB.





The recon ruck that I had done also gave me a lot of confidence, since I had already explored the area before.


One point was challenging to find, because the picture only showed the entrance of the area, and the actual point was inside the area.  We and another team searched for a while there, and eventually, after expanding our search area a good bit, we found it.  


There were a couple of points that were marked as water-based, but if you were willing to get wet, you didn't necessarily need a kayak to get them!  SB took it for the team and offered to get them.



We finished grabbing the last couple points in the southern section.  This was kind of an out and back portion, so we saw a number of other teams along the way.  It was also kind of an uphill portion, so the way out was a grind, but we flew down on the way back.




On our way back to the TA, considered taking a potential shortcut which would've required some extra biking to check out the feasibility of.  We ended up taking the conservative, longer route, and as we passed the exit point of the shortcut, we realized that the shortcut would've worked.  Oh well... you win some, you lose some.  Such is the nature of orienteering.


Paddle Portion

Onto the paddle!  This is a discipline that you typically don't get to practice or do as much, since it requires having a watercraft and access to water, and a means of getting the watercraft to the water.  There are places where you can rent in the warmer months, and there are public launch points around, but it takes more effort than biking or hiking.  We were therefore excited for the opportunity to get on the water.

We decided to go upstream first, so that we'd know how hard of a fight that would be.  We got one point by a bridge, followed by another on an island that some people apparently "swam" to from the shore, instead of getting it by kayak!


There was a land-based one that we ended up paddling to try to get closer to.  We ended up biking through that area later, so it actually used up more time than it should've.



Next, we decided to go downstream, which required doing a portage.  It was going to take a decent amount of time to do the portage, but you don't get to do this kind of thing often, so we went for it!  We had explored the possibility of getting this one by land, but hadn't seen the point from the shore.  The water was quite swift, anyways, so kayaking was the prudent choice.  It took all the paddling power we had to go straight across the water to get to the point, and avoid going downstream with the current too much.  



The portage was actually a longer trek than expected, and involved a good bit of uphill and downhill on technical terrain, so it's good that we train for coupons!  When you dock, you have to keep good control of the kayak, too, because if you lose control of it, the current will pull it away and take it down the dam.


Northern Portion

Upon finishing that adventure, we got back on our bikes to ride up the trail and to the north.


The trail took us into a neighborhood, whose entrance hid another point.  I wonder what the neighbors thought of all the random bikers in weird gear, going through that day.



We went to George Poston Park, where we got one point from a little paved bike loop down by the river, grabbed a point at the pump track, and found one point on a trail system.  After that, we went up an awesome rocky mountain up to a tower.  We made good choices about when to drop our bikes and look on foot, since we're not technical trail riders.




Unfortunately, this point ended up getting thrown out in final scoring, because it had been plotted incorrectly.  The RD didn't want to be unfair to the teams that had unsuccessfully searched where the point was plotted, even though the clue picture very clearly showed this path up to the tower.  It's a tough call for anyone in that position to have to make.  They do their best to make it fair, knowing that in the end, some teams will benefit from a call, and others will not.  

On the way back from the park, we took roads.  At one point, I had missed a turn, but we quickly recognized that we were on a place on the map that we had not intended to be, and corrected course.  We rode into the finish area, where we now had the opportunity to go for two bonus points, in the time that remained.  We had about an hour.  It's a bit of a gamble, because you need to come back to the finish line and end your race before the 8 hour mark, but points are what determine the winner.  There was a trekking point (the gazebo 2 miles away, at the end of a trail) and a kayaking point (the island that we had been to before).  Knowing our rucking pace (15 min/mi is very doable), and not wanting to have to deal with launching the kayak again and taking on the unknowns of the paddle and the currents, we opted to go for a ruck.  It is harder on tired legs, but we knew we could do it, and we did it with about 12 minutes to spare.

We had covered about 35 miles total, with 29 on bike, 5 on foot, and 1 by kayak.




At the awards, we were declared the first place female division winners, although post-race, the removal of the tower point knocked us down to 2nd place.  The prize was the same in all cases, though... a custom stamped log segment.

Frank, our orienteering buddy, did the race with his wife, who we got to meet for the first time.  That's fun that they got to do this together.


I ended up winning a raffle from the pool of people who donated to the conservation group, which was a nice surprise.  A lot of local companies donated items for the basket, like Gaston County, the Honey Hunters team, South Main Cycles, Muddy River Distillery, and District 8 Beer Company. 



The race was well-organized and fun for beginners and past adventure racers alike.  I'm looking forward to doing the race again in the future!
