USPSA #12

 TRAINING LEAD-UP

Monday, Apr 13:

Glute and pec PT v2 in 24:57, "My Invention" in 34:50... I couldn't handle the "+" version today.  I did 10x 60# squat cleans within a minute as a finisher.

Tuesday, Apr 14:

Rucked 2 laps of Rocky Branch Park... the first loop was with my parents, then I went again while they went to Aldi.  I played Ingress and rucked with 30# in the shorty v3 rucker, wearing MACV2 8".

The second lap was a little bit like a farletk because I'd go slow when I was at portals, but I'd try to maximize time and move fast between portals.  That ended up being nice training.

I finished in 2:16:34.

Wednesday, Apr 15:

I rucked Renaissance Park - my normal big loop, plus some of the main drive for Ingress activities.  I went fast with the shorty v3 rucker with 30# and MACV2 8"s for cardio and to beat the sunset.

I covered 4 mi in 1:16:55.

Thursday, Apr 16:

Yoga to Reduce Cortisol & Anchor in Hope with Adriene

I hadn't been feeling up to dry fire for a while, since I was tired physically, and my nervous system also didn't feel up to speed.

I gave it a go today, though.

I did 1 mag of multiple targets, using the Appalachian Syndicate dry fire kit targets for the first time.  I mixed in a bit of moving and shooting and leaning around corners.  Maybe I should've warmed up with simpler drills, but I was excited to try the targets.

I did normal draws and shoots next.
- The left palm smash continues to be important.
- I do like the weight of the Snap Point 147 dummy rounds.  It feels much more real, weight-wise.
- I was tending around 2s and was feeling slow.  I got better by the third mag.

I did 2 mags of draw, load, shoot from cold
- Continue the left palm smash
- Be intentional with every step of the reload process, as if everything was real

I did 2 mags of 180 degree turn-and-shoot starting from hands above shoulders
- I went from 2.1X on the first mag to 1.9X on the second mag, and then I slowed back down to 2.1X for the last few, which might be a sign that I was getting tired by the end of the hour.

I finished with 30 presses.

There are so many fun and different things you can do with dry fire.

Friday, Apr 17:

18A "Upper Body Prep" in 22:58, then "Pull-ups" in 31:35 - eh, but still building, 2 min 40# SB OH hold as a finisher

Saturday, Apr 18:

Flow - Day 29 - Trust & Reunite with Your Center yoga with Adriene

Sunday, Apr 19:

10 mi trail run at Latta Nature Preserve in 2:31:15 (15:08/mi ave) in Saucony Nomads, playing Ingress.  My right glute has been tight lately, but the run went OK

For Dry Fire,

I started with 3 mags of surprise breaks... it helps to apply more force to the back of the backstrap and make an upwards shelf with my left index finger.

I did 3 mags of timed draws and shoots.
- Instead of prioritizing speed, I prioritized getting A-zone hits with visual pateince
- I was at 2.2-2.3s, which was slow, but it was worth the "points"
- I got to 1.8-1.9 by the third mag
- I'm still doing the forward lean and no thumbs and drawing from my belt level

I did 2 mags of multiple targets, with some walk and shoot mixed in.
- I went l_>R, R->L, N->F, U & D, etc.
- I have to remember to keep that strong left grip.

I finished with 20 presses.

APRIL BLACKSTONE THIRD MONDAY MATCH

Stage 1: <Comstock>
- Start in the shooting box behind the wall, hot and holstered
- Shoot 2 IPSC 2x ea from any of 3 height windows in the wall from 10yd
- Run up to the left room and shoot 3 IPSC 2x ea, from 3-7yd
- Run to the right room and shoot 4 IPSC 2x ea, from 5-7yd

Learnings/Outcomes: 13/15 division, 21/29 overall
- 18A in 24.57 = 3.6630% HF
- It was suddenly my turn after a few people went because the guy in front of me was a no-show, and I had been working the tablet right before that
- I wanted to focus on getting all A's this match, to re-calibrate after last match when I had too many C's... the key would be to see my sights
- I did a mag change on the last movement in case I needed a make up shot, since it was a long movement anyway

Stage 2: <Comstock>
- Start behind the barrel, unloaded with gun and mags on the barrel.  All reloads must come from the barrel.
- Shoot 3 IPSC 3X ea from the back left box @7-15yd
- Shoot 3 IPSC 3X ea from the middle right box @10-15yd
- Shoot 3 IPSC 3X ea from the front room alley @7yd

Learnings/Outcomes: 13/15 div, 22/29 overall
- 23A, 1C in 33.50 = 3.5224% HF
- Did 2 makeup shots but didn't always improve that C to an A... just did another C
- Went dry due to makeups after the second array
- Grabbed for a mag from my belt by instinct, then realized it was on the barrel, which fortunately, was closeby
- Saw my sights but didn't have extreme visual patience
- Was second to go and didn't really know the start condition, despite having seen the previous squad do multiple runs
- Wondered at the last second if I could start with my slide back, but I didn't ask, since I had already wasted time trying to get the start condition right

Stage 4: <Comstock>
- Start behind the barrel, hands above shoulders, hot and holstered
- Shoot 2 IPSCs 2x ea from the back left box @10-15yd
- Run to the middle right box and shoot 3 IPSC 2x ea from 10-15yd
- Run to the front room and shoot 4 IPSCs 2x ea through the hallway @6yd

Learnings/Outcomes: 13/15 div, 21/29 overall
- 17A, 1C in 24.63 = 3.5729% HF
- I felt a bit more pressure with my coach on the timer
- She did encourage others to take my tablet early, to give me more prep time, which was nice
- I did a preemptive mag change again on the last movement
- I had planned to land on the right side of the back left box to minimize shifting for clear shots
- I decided to go for the center of mass of the far right target from the second box, since the A-zone area was small and close to NS's
- Oddly, my slide locked back after 2 shots on the first array.  I did a tap and double rack to clear it... not sure why I had to double rack.  I don't know what caused it, but my mag felt like it could've been a little loose and not all the way in, even though I'm usually pretty careful about it when making ready.
- I had wanted to get the gun up fast in the first box, and I did.
- I prioritized getting to box 2 AFAP instead of getting the gun up and going more slowly

Stage 3: <Comstock>
- Start on the XXs on the back right of the bay, unloaded and holstered.
- Shoot 3 head shots @15yd through any window level on the wall, 2x ea
- Run to the left room and shoot 1 head shot and 2 torsos 2x ea @5-10yd
- Run to the right room and shoot 2 head shots and 1 torso 2x ea @7yd

Learnings/Outcomes: 8/15 div, 12/29 overall
- 11A, 6C, 1M in 31.8- = 1.9811% HF
- I forgot during "make ready" that we start cold, so I had to clear and reset.  I had even rehearsed that loading process dry, while waiting for my turn...

Overall 13/15 div, 20/29 overall
- Prioritizing all A's did me well... continue this
- Tablet does take away from focus
- I wasn't good at focusing on starting conditions this time... no major harm, other than the mental hurdle you end up starting the stage with.
