GunRun Team Match - Ellerbe 2021

Tuesday, September 14:

Detox and Reset Yoga with Adriene, with some of my own stretching pre and post.  Perfect for post-HTB, with lots of gentle leg work.

Wednesday, September 15:

Yoga for Renewal with Adriene.  My mind still really wants to work out, but I rested and blogged, instead.

Thursday, September 16:

"Active Recovery" BW workout in 40 min, including 6 min of stretched, followed by Rucklympics Week 7 22 min BW AMRAP.  Did a 3 mile bike ride afterwards, around the neighborhood.

Friday, September 17:

4.5 miles in 1:28:20 in the Altra Torin Plush to make it easy on my recovering feet.  30# in the shorty Rucker v3.

Saturday, September 18:

"Int/Adv: Remember" in 62 min, with 30 step-ups per round instead of 3 flights of stairs.  30# shorty v3 rucker, and a 60#SB for the DLs, wearing a ruck for everything.  Wore the Ballistic Trainers because of the step-ups.

Pre-gaming, then dinner with SB's neighbors for a Girls' Night plus Trip in the evening.

Sunday, September 19:

Tested out SB's husband's scope, to use for longer range shots required at the GunRun.  Fortunately, we had a large target to help us.

Monday, September 20:

8.7 mile bike ride around the neighborhood, moving clockwise, in 46 min.  Wore the Specialized chamois.  Afterwards, did the "Beginner: Bring it up" workout in 30 min, using various SBs.  Then live online yoga with Liz Cheezman.

Tuesday, September 21:

Rucklympics Week 8 in 30 min (squats with ruck OH, added a ruck for the rows and 40#SB for pull-throughs), followed by 2x (100 flutters, 15 60#SB squat cleans).  Rucked 4.5 miles in 1:23:50 in MACV1s afterwards, listening to BRF BARF Episode 75 on the US Adventure Race Nationals.  They are hilarious and informative.

Thursday, September 23:

"Int/Adv Sufferfest" in 38 min with 30#R and 40#SB for everything except DLs, which I did with a 60#er.  Plus a 2.5 min ruck OH hold at the end.  Did 3 miles afterwards in the shorty v3 and Altra Torin Plush, to continue to be nice to my feet.

GUN RUN TEAM MATCH

SB and I were excited to do our first team version of the Gun Run, which was going to be held at Dewitt's Outdoors.  In a team match, you run together, and complete stages together.  At each stage, there could be slightly different tasks for each shooter, and you can be strategic about who does what based on strengths and weaknesses.  Although SB says that she doesn't like running, she is quite good at it, and I was pushing to keep up when she took off at the start.

Stage 1: 46/68 teams passed.

Start in the back of a truck.  Get out, and within 7 seconds, one person (me) shoots at a nearby cardboard figure wearing a shirt, then moves on to starts engaging some pistol targets, 10 little knock-over ones on a pallet, which I did really well at according to the RO.  When I start on the knock-overs, Shannon starts engaging 3 targets across the pond with her rifle, with the option to use a folding chair as a prop.  I finish first, so I drag a sim man, and then I can start helping her shoot the rifle targets.  It took me a moment to remember/confirm that I could shoot simultaneously.  We weren't able to finish in time.  The rifle targets were difficult to hit.

Stage 2: 27/68 pass.

There are far targets at 308yds (12x20 torsos), that one shooter (we choose SB) engages.  In the meantime, I apply a TQ.  Once she finishes, I shoot, although we didn't get that far.  People struggled because they didn't know their holds or bracket.

Stage 3: 41/69 pass.

Crawl under barbed wire, I get to stab a sentry with a stage knife.
We go into a little shed, and take turns shooting at targets across the pond, in a specific sequence based on an intel card that we were given.  4 hits on 1 target, 3 hits on the next target, 2 hits on the last target.  We ran out of time.  The stabbing part was fun, though, so I'm glad I got to do that.

Stage 4: 58/69.

Litter carry - we did well at this, and caught up to a team in front of us.  We took a few breaks, to not destroy our grips.  It was about 130# total.

For the actual shoot, we had SB take out the shotgun shell that she had received at the start, and she breached.  I went in and shot a number of pistol steel targets.  Then, it was her turn to shoot another steel pistol target through a hole in the wall.

Teams that had somehow lost or forgotten their shotgun shell had to do a penalty of using an axe to chop up a pallet, to simulate breaking down the door manually.

Stage 5: 54/68 pass.

We were in a treehouse, to simulate sniper work.  The targets were unpainted. SB handled the rifle targets, and at the end,  I engaged a pistol target.  We were able to pass this stage, our first one for this match!

We realized afterwards that we could've used the ladder as a prop to shoot off of.

Stage 6: 49/68 pass.

We did bounding.  12x20 torsos, 80 yards at the closest.  It wasn't clear to us that we had to communicate with each other on when to move, vs having the ROs dictate when we'd move.  We did pass, which was really exciting, since we both shot well.

We stuck around afterwards.  It is fun to chat with other gun runners after the event, and hear about their experiences.  SB can also easily amuse herself with finding subjects for her nature pics.

It's really cool that they have Gun Running Girl stickers now, too.

We learned after the match that there had been a snake at Stage 3.  Fortunately, we had brave dudes ready to save the day.

Team Match was definitely a fun twist on the Gun Run!  Our total run time was 84 minutes, with a run rank of 24/68.  Our shoot rank was 58/68.  Overall, our rank was 47/68.  I was excited to pass 2 stages this time, as opposed to my 0/6 pass rate from my previous/first GunRun in June.  Teamwork makes the dream work!
